Classical Guitar Competition

Aguado Guitar Concerts Classical Guitar Solo and Chamber Competitions will be held on May 3 and 4, 2019 at Park View High School, 400 West Laurel Avenue, Sterling, VA 20164.

The Chamber Competition will start Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., and the Solo Competition will start on Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. Exact times will be announced in the days preceding the competition, once the entrants are known.

Winners will be announced at Matt Palmer’s concert, at 7 p.m. at Community Lutheran Church. Winners will also be invited to play at the Winners’ Recital on Sunday May 5, at 2 p.m., location TBA where they will receive their prizes.

Solo Competition

Eligibility: The Solo Competition is open to middle and high school students from Loudoun County, as well as students who are studying with teachers from Loudoun County.

Age Divisions:

  • There will be a separate division for each grade, 7-12.
  • There will be two adult divisions: up to one year of instruction, and more than one year of instruction.

Program: Free choice, not to exceed 8 minutes.

Prizes in each division:

  • $100 First Prize
  • $50 value second place
  • Certificate for third place

Special Prize: $100 First Prize for the best interpretation of a composition by Miroslav Lončar, awarded by the composer.

Overall Winner Prize: $150

Chamber Competition

Eligibility: the Chamber Ensemble Competition is open to guitar duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets from Loudoun County. All ensembles will compete together in the appropriate age division. Ensembles will compete in the category of the oldest person in the group. Ensembles may not have a conductor.

Age divisions:

  • 7th and 8th grade
  • 9th and 10th grade
  • 11th and 12th grade

Program: Free choice, not to exceed 10 minutes.

Prizes in each division: Trophies for First, Second, and Third places will be awarded.


$20 Solo application fee or $25 ensemble application fee, payable to Aguado Guitar Concerts. Please write “Guitar Competition” on your check. Applications may be sent to Aguado Guitar Concerts, 46484 Hollymead Place, Sterling, VA 20165.

    how old do you have to be to enter? what kind of songs should they play?

      In years past, we have had separate divisions for each of 7th through 12th grades, and then two adult divisions broken up by number of years of experience. There are also ensemble divisions.

      This is a classical guitar competition, so entrants should choose two short pieces (time limits are still undecided) that best showcase their skill at classical techniques.
